The Top 20 Shield Nickel Varieties Registries

I believe that the Top 20 Shield Nickels are a numismatic challenge that is going to be extraordinarily difficult to meet, as are the challenges imposed by the Top 20 runners up and the "Juicy" varieties. If you are able to make progress in any of these groupings, then you are a true shield nickel collector and you are eligible for listing in this registry.

There are three different Top 20 registries. The first registry covers the Top 20 coins. The second registry covers the Top 20 Runners Up. The third registry covers the "Juicy" varieties. Each registry table has a list across the top with links to the appropriate page on this website so that you don't need to refer back to the main page each time.

If you have managed to collect three or more of the varieties in any of the registry lists you are eligible to be listed. Three varieties spread across the three lists doesn't count - you must have three varieties within in a single list. Email me (link at the bottom of this page) if you qualify and would like to be listed. Please be prepared to substantiate your claim somehow - email me to discuss what will be most appropriate for you.

One issue has arisen as the listings were sent in. Sometimes, a coin may qualify in two different places. An example would be Top 20 #12 (1873 DDO S1-1001 F-06 FS-103 (FS-008.8)), which could also be used as Runner Up #5 (a generic 1873 closed 3). I believe it best matches the spirit of the lists if a coin can be used to fill only one slot. However, if someone were to own two different Top 20 #12 coins, he could register one of them as the Top 20 and the other as Runner Up #5 - the limitation is that a single coin can only be counted once.

Registrants should provide a list of the coins owned for each registry table using the registry numbers for that table. You must include the grade to be listed. The format is List Name, List Entry #, Numerical or Adjectival Grade. Here are some sample registration lines:

Top 20 #4 VF
Runner Up #16A 62
Juicy #L2 45

Your registration can be listed pseudonymously if you wish, and that is encouraged for security reasons.

This is just for fame and glory, sorry, no cash prizes (unless of course there is a volunteer to provide a cash prize!). Registrants will be listed in order of percentage complete. While grades are recorded, they do not affect standings - this is not a condition registry.

Not all column numbers are present because not all Top 20 have runners up. #16 has 2 runners up.
